Saturday and Sunday Sailing

Saturday Sailing:
Every Saturday there is a Dinghy Sailing class at 10am.
Call (415) 281-0212 for more info. Meet at Java House Coffee House before sailing.

Sunday Sailing:
This is the original basis of BAADS. The purpose is to teach sailing as a vehicle by which those with disabilities and more recently the inner-city communities, gain the confidence, strategic planning and communication skills necessary to command a sailing vessel on a challenging venue like San Francisco Bay. The concept of co-ability was originated by BAADS some twenty years ago on Oakland’s Lake Merritt  when two people with complementing disabilities accomplished together as a team what they could not do alone.
• Sunday sail classes are 12 months of the year to learn the rudiments of sailing. These take place on  the larger keelboats that are used for the American Sailing Association certification training. Located on B dock in the South Beach Marina.
Please call (415) 281-0212 and leave name and number for reserving space for SundaySailing.
We meet at the JAVA House just before noon almost  every Sunday 12 months of the year except between Christmas and New Years. Usually we are out for about 3- 5 hours, depending upon the boat you sail and the comfort of the crew. Class is informal, participation is voluntary but encouraged.  Some sailors on board are preparing for  passing their ASA certification. The wind and currents determines where we sail. We could stay in the South Bay sailing along San Francisco’s old shipyards heading towards the Hunters Point area; towards the East Bay, traveling down the Oakland Estuary; around Treasure Island;  along San Francisco’s waterfront; around Angel Island with lunch at the Corinthan Yacht Club, or out  under the Golden Gate Bridge.  After returning to South Beach Harbor we ask everyone to help put the boats away and come up to the yacht club for a drink and great conversation about their day’s sail.  Bring a lunch if you want and a camera to show off what the landlubbers have missed! Very seldom does anyone get seasick, and if this should happen we will return to the Harbor. The whole idea is to have fun, make new friends and learn skills that can be transferred over to other aspects of their lives.
