Topic T3A3- Points of Sail


1) The angle between a sailboat’s heading, or course, and the direction of the wind.

2) Beating- As close to the eye of the wind as possible

a. Sailing “On the Wind” (Close Hauled)

b. Pinching- too close, sails start to “Luff”

c. Tacks, Tacking

d. Sail Trim

3) Reaching-

a. Sailing “Across the Wind”

b. Close Reach (toward the wind)

c. Beam Reach (90 degrees to the wind)

d. Broad Reach (away from the wind) (typically the fastest point of sail)

e. Sail trim

4) Running-

a. Sailing “Before the Wind”

b. Wind from astern

c. Downwind sailing

d. “Wing-and-Wing”

e. Jibing

f. Sail Trim

g. Watch for accidental jibe!!
