Topic T3A1- Getting Underway, Leaving Port


1) Personnel Assignments

a. Skipper- In charge, responsible for all activities and the safety of the crew

b. Mooring Line Handlers- depending on circumstances, usually 1 or 2 required; ensure proper stowage of the mooring lines

c. Fenders- 1 or 2 people, can be the line handlers

d. Lookout- in the eyes of the boat (forward, best (safe) position for height-of-eye advantage)

e. Foredeck- double-check main halyard attachment to the headboard; ensure mainsail goes up smoothly, removes/stows sail ties as directed

f. Main Halyard- to raise the mainsail

g. Main/Jib Sheet Handlers- to trim sails

h. Other Line Handlers as needed:
i. Jib Furling (Reefing) line
ii. Topping Lift (Dutchman System)
iii. Boom Vang
iv. Main Reef Lines
v. Cunningham
vi. Outhaul

2) Maneuvering Out of the Berth (Options/Considerations)

a. Wind Effects
b. Current Effects

c. Mooring Line Uses

d. Engine Use/Prop Effect

e. Sail Use

f. Rudder Use

3) Maneuvering Under Power

a. Wheel Steering (centerline indicator)

b. Tiller Steering

c. NO BRAKES!!

d. Obey Harbor Rules/Speed Limits

e. Look for “outs”- have a back-up plan!

4) Transitioning from Power to Sail

a. Clear of the harbor entrance

b. Safe Course, Head-to-Wind, Maintain Steerage

c. Raise the Mainsail

d. Fall off……gain momentum

e. Secure engine, (stow key!)

f. Deploy the Jib (ensure furling line is free to run, rope clutch disengaged)

g. Stow Main Halyard, other lines as necessary
